IIS vs IOP and Why the Difference Matters

IIS vs IOP and Why the Difference Matters

Not all eating disorder care is created equal

If you’re looking into treatment options for an eating disorder, you’ve probably come across the term IOP, or Intensive Outpatient Program. On paper, IOPs sound like a good solution. They offer structured care while allowing clients to stay at home. But for many people, these programs don’t go far enough or don’t fit into real life. That’s where IIS comes in.

At Sinnergy Wellness Group, we created Individualized Intensive Services (IIS) to provide a more flexible, more personalized alternative to traditional IOPs. The goal isn’t just to meet a checklist. It’s to meet people where they actually are, with care that makes sense for their life.

What's the Real Difference?

While both IOP and IIS provide outpatient support for eating disorder recovery, the experience can feel very different depending on the approach. Here’s a side-by-side look at how they compare:

IOP

Rigid schedule (usually 3–4 days per week at fixed times)

Group-based therapy, regardless of comfort level

Often staffed by early-career clinicians

Insurance determines what’s included

Limited flexibility and remote options

Little to no support for family or home environment

IIS

Custom schedule based on your availability and needs

One-on-one sessions with experienced specialists

Seasoned professionals with decades of experience

You choose your services a la carte

Virtual and in-person services available

Parent coaching, family support, and home-based integration included

It's Not Just About Structure, It's About Fit

IOPs are built to work within the constraints of health insurance. That means they’re often designed to fit a mold, not a person. Everyone gets the same schedule. The same type of sessions. The same expectations. For some people, that might be enough. But for many, it’s not.

IIS was designed to give people more control, more support, and more space to heal in ways that actually make sense. If someone needs daily meal support, they get it. If a parent needs help navigating dinners at home, that’s built into the plan. If weekends or evenings are the only time that works, we adjust the schedule.

What Matters Most Is Personalization

Eating disorders are complex. So is recovery. No two people walk the same path, which is why a program that works for one person might completely miss the mark for another. With IIS, you don’t have to adapt your life to fit treatment. We adapt treatment to fit you. That’s the core difference. It also means you’re not starting over every time you meet with someone new. Our providers work as a team, behind the scenes, to ensure that your care is consistent and connected.

If traditional models haven’t worked for you, it’s okay to want something different.
IIS exists because you deserve care that sees the full picture, not just the diagnosis. To learn more about how IIS can support you or your loved one, contact us today. We’re here when you’re ready.
