What To Expect in Nutrition Therapy For An Eating Disorder

What To Expect in Nutrition Therapy For An Eating Disorder

When beginning nutrition therapy for an eating disorder, it is generally recommended to commit to 6-8 weeks of weekly sessions, followed by gradually increasing intervals in between. Sessions are typically 50 minutes and can also be 30 minutes depending on what is needed for your recovery. The first appointment will be a 90 minute in depth assessment. This will be our first time working together, so whether we are meeting face-to-face in my Scottsdale office or virtually through my telehealth platform, getting to know you, your history, and your current reasons for seeking treatment is my main priority. While I do have specific information I need to gather in this first visit, I do take a very individualistic approach. My experience doing this work for close to 30 years in all levels of care has taught me how to ‘read between the lines’, so rest assured from the second we meet I will always be dialed in to where you are and what you really need.

Some people come to see a dietitian or nutritionist expecting to just talk about food. I always found this to be a little ironic because in this 90 minute nutrition assessment we will talk about so much more than apples and bananas. Some people are excited to see me and eager to learn, while others are resistant and consider the registered dietitian/nutritionist to be the ‘food police’. I’ve been called it all and what I love more than anything is a client who is a little unsure or even resistant because winning you over and helping you to save your own life gives me great joy!

I expect you to be scared and maybe even a little lost. While eating disorder treatment, learning how to eat, and finding your way around a grocery store might be new for you, it isn’t for me. We have left no stone unturned in working to create a very safe and dignified experience for all of our clients.

We work with the Scottsdale, Carefree, Fountain Hills, Cave Creek communities, as well as remotely with our Virtual EDRD services. Contact us here.
